Genotypes for Dilute and Dilute Modified colours
Nomenclature note: When a gene can be any one of a series the (-) sign is used Eg a blue could be written B- indicating that (-) can stand for B or b or bl.
1. Possible genotypes for dilute cats.
| Colour (phenotype) | Possible genetics (Genotype) |
| Blue | BB dd OR Bb dd OR Bbl dd |
| Lilac | bb dd Or bbl dd |
| Fawn | blbl dd |
Note: If a "D" appear in the genotype the cat will not be dilute however if they are Dd they will "carry" dilute and have a 50:50 chance of passing it on to the offspring. If 2 cats that are Dd are mated they will, on average, have 50% dilute and 50% non-dilutes kittens.
2. Possible genotypes for Dilute Modified cats.
| Recognised Colour | Base colour | Possible genotype |
| Caramel | Blue | B-ddDMDM B-ddDMdm (total of 6 possibilities) |
| Caramel (taupe) | Lilac | bbddDMDM, bbddDMdm, bblddDMDM, bblddDMdm |
| Caramel | Fawn | blblddDMDM, blblddDMdm |
Note a non-modified cat will have to be dmdm. eg a lilac could be bbdddmdm.
